Cookie Policy
Last updated: 23 March 2026
We believe in being transparent about what we store in your browser. This page explains everything.
Introduction
ActiveSoft Ltd ("we", "us", "our") is committed to transparency about how we use cookies and browser storage. This policy explains what we store, why we store it, and how you can control it.
This policy applies to activetax.pages.dev and activetax.uk and complies with the UK's Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) as updated by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places in your browser. They allow the site to remember information between page loads and visits.
Separately, websites can use local storage — a browser feature that stores data on your device, similar to cookies but without an expiry date and never sent to the server automatically.
Why We Don't Show a Consent Banner
Under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, a consent banner is only required if a website uses cookies for advertising, tracking, or profiling. ActiveTax does none of these things. We use only strictly necessary cookies and functionality storage, so no banner is legally required.
Cookies We Use
ActiveTax itself does not set any cookies. The following cookies are set automatically by Cloudflare, our website hosting provider, for security purposes:
| Cookie Name | Provider | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
__cf_bm | Cloudflare | Bot management — distinguishes humans from automated traffic to protect the site | Strictly Necessary | 30 minutes |
_cfuvid | Cloudflare | Rate limiting — prevents abuse of the site by limiting excessive requests | Strictly Necessary | Session |
These cookies are essential for the security and availability of the website. They cannot be disabled without breaking site protection.
Local Storage We Use
ActiveTax uses your browser's local storage (not cookies) to remember your preferences and keep you logged in:
| Key | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|
auth_token | Stores your login session (a JWT — JSON Web Token) so you stay logged in between page loads | Strictly Necessary |
theme | Remembers whether you prefer dark or light mode | Functionality |
dashboard-storage | Saves your dashboard layout preferences, such as which sections are expanded and which tax year is selected | Functionality |
activetax_device_id | A random identifier for your device, required by HMRC's fraud prevention regulations that all MTD software must comply with | Strictly Necessary (Regulatory) |
What We Do NOT Use
We do not use any of the following:
- Analytics cookies or tracking pixels (e.g. Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel)
- Advertising or retargeting cookies
- Social media tracking widgets
- Any cookies or storage that profile you across other websites
This means your browsing activity on ActiveTax is not shared with any advertising networks.
How to Manage Cookies and Local Storage
You can clear cookies and local storage at any time through your browser settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data
Please note: Clearing local storage will remove your
auth_token and log you out of ActiveTax. It will also
remove your activetax_device_id, which will cause a new
one to be generated on your next login — this is required for HMRC
compliance.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when it was last revised. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
